I've just had <http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3111> pointed out to me, which seems to describe the same symptoms (O(n^2) for number of symbols with dwarf2 debugging) so could conceivably be the same bug. I'm going to give the patch from H.J. Lu at <http://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2006-08/msg00334.html> a spin on my alpha to see if it does any good. James, if it does do you think this would be a reasonable fix to try to get in for etch? H.J. does mention that the patch trades memory for speed, I'm not sure if this would be a problem on our low-mem arches so close to release.
