I originally naively thought this would be as easy as twiddling debian/control to add amd64 as a build architecture, but that turns out not to be true. There are arch-specific include files for ia32 and ia64 that need to be "ported" for an amd64/em64t version. If using the ia32 version isn't sufficient, and you're inclined to have a look at what needs to be done, be my guest. I'm personally more worried about addressing #376000, but upstream suggested I/we(Debian) could feel free to do the work if we want that done soon [sigh], and I haven't gotten to it yet either.
