I get random 'A' (up arrow) and 'B' (down arrow) characters inserted
into the file every now and again. When using the left arrow I get 'D'
characters and with the right arrow key I get random 'C' characters
inserted occasionally. This is causing me no-end of errors in my
server config files.

This error is, I think, caused by the way that keys are read under termcap. I had this bug for a long time, but I thought it was fixed, and I cannot reproduce it with the version currently in sarge.

For me, the bug was always easier to reproduce on slow connections (typically, ssh sessions).

Could we have more details about the conditions under which you're using Zile, and the architecture on which you're running sarge (I don't know if that's important, but I'm only using i386 systems). Also, what are your terminal's auto-repeat settings?

With zile-2.0.1-1 I can get a similar (but non-random) bug by running zile in the console: whenever I press a cursor key, \34 is inserted in the buffer; holding down the key causes it to navigate normally, but exactly one \34 is inserted for each cursor key stroke. I'd be interested to know if you get this too.
