Hi,

there won't be any transition from cups-filters 1.x to cups-filters 2.x. For whatever reason upstream decided to rename cups-filters to libcupsfilters2.

libcupsfilters2 belongs to the CUPSv3 family of packages. These packages are far from being usable at all, so nothing external should depend on any of them. They will be introduced one after the other and the last upload will be cups3, maybe sometime next year.

Therefore for Trixie the CUPSv2 family of packages will be still responsible for printing and gnome should only depend on those.

Thorsten,

the new generation of cups-filters (2.x), split into libcupsfilters, libppd, cups-filters, and cups-browsed, each of version 2.x, is not part of CUPS 3.x. They are designed to work with BOTH CUPS 2.x and CUPS 3.x. They detect the presence of the CUPS version (2.x or 3.x) in the "./configure" step and then build appropriately.

The cups-filters 2.x components are fully functional and work without problems with CUPS 2.x. In Ubuntu I have switched to cups-filters 2.x from version 23.04 on and all is working.

If you have any problems with the transition in Debian, please check the Ubuntu packages.

CUPS 3.x is indeed not ready yet and if, according to Michael Sweet, all the 3 components of it (libcups, cups-local, cups-sharing) will be ready mid-2025, so if all works well, I will do the switch-over in Ubuntu 25.10.
