This is not *exactly* a forwarded upstream bug: it's more important that
it gets fixed in Debian than it would be upstream, and for Debian's
purposes it would be enough to have a subset of the changes that I
requested upstream.
If upstream wants to take a while to do this "properly", then it might
be necessary to have a shorter-term/stopgap solution within Debian in
the meantime, rather than letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
