OK, I was completely wrong on that. Inkscape is able to open eps-files that way. So, the good thing is that I could reproduce the bug ;-). But then I removed my $HOME/.inkscape/preferences.xml accidentally and the error went away ;-(. So could you please try to move your preferences.xml somewhere and check again if you can opene your eps? If you can reproduce this bug behaviour (segfault with pref, runnig without pref) it would be good if you could send me your preferences file, so we have something to start debugging from.
