thunderbird renamed the desktop file from thunderbird.desktop to net.thunderbird.Thunderbird.desktop This change broke application tracking in gnome-shell as it is no longer able to match the process to the desktop file. If you run xprop | grep CLASS, you'll see WM_CLASS(STRING) = "Mail", "thunderbird" So gnome-shell is looking for a desktop file named thunderbird.desktop. For comparison, nautilus: xprop | grep CLASS WM_CLASS(STRING) = "org.gnome.Nautilus", "Org.gnome.Nautilus" Please either rename the desktop file or make sure the WM_CLASS name matches the desktop file name. Another possibility is to specificy StartupWMClass in the desktop file.
