If we can't be different, but have to do everywhere the same as
everyone else,... why do we need a separate distribution?


I think the main question here is:
Was something wrong with the old behaviour?
And I'd say: No.

Actually, having a sane path set when being root is what one
expects,... or have there been any bigger complaints about this in the
past?
Sure one can just type su - ... but why?


In the end it boils down to Debian users being "punished" in having
adapt to something else for not good reason :-(
