I was also surprised by this new behavior. I liked becoming root and staying

I do have a note about that NEWS entry though and also what you've replied in 
this bug (and probably others).
You and the NEWS entry say "use 'su -'", but the updated man page says this:
"It is recommended to always use the --login option (instead of its shortcut 
-) to avoid side effects caused by mixing environments."

If we're going to 'force'/educate people to do the right thing, better do it 
proper and consistent ;-)
