Sorry I don't understand, I thought you were looking for a way to test
building/running with OpenJDK 9, in this case pulling
default-jre/default-jdk from experimental is the best approach (you can
also play with update-java-alternatives or set the JAVA_HOME variable
but that's not strictly equivalent).

If you manage to drop the direct dependency on the openjdk-* packages
you won't have to update the R packages twice a year, I thought you
would appreciate a suggestion intended to lower your workload.
