Well, given that sarge will become new stable in a matter of a couple month, maybe you should give it a try. Did you try adding sarge to your sources list, and upgrade just module-init-tools, initrd-tools and the kernel-image ? Try adding it with the (-s ?) try-only option to check if it will bring in load of stuff or not, but i guess it will bring in the new glibc too.
