It seems something happened to my root account. Reboted and went to init=/bin/bash and ran passwd. Was able to get control of the root account and run the update successfully. I reinstalled this computer yesterday, so I must have improperly documented or did not properly execute my deployment notes for it. Something very specialist of course. I had done so little to the laptop I was not sure how I could make a mistake like this. Apologies for the time wasted; ticket can be closed now.
