So why is it that writing to /etc/group fails or your system?
Are you having filesystem problems and your filesystem became
remounted read-only? Can you open (as root) /etc/group and write
to it? What's the status and permissions on /etc/group on your
system?

This seems more like a general system problem on your end rather
than a bug in the package.
