Hello -

I am writing in regards to bug #192253 on bugs.debian.org,
reporting that unzip cannot handle 2GB-4GB zip files.
A patch to fix this problem is provided in 2003 by Paul Slootman.
The upstream version has not been updated to correct this problem,
and it appears that debian is waiting on upstream to confirm Paul's
patch. The only possible point of failure I see in the patch would be
in dealing with files that are in some way actually >4GB (for one,
file format restrictions come into play).
One of the typical functions of an OS vendor is to apply platform-
specific patches in a more timely fashion than the upstream provider.
I don't see any reason that free software should not enjoy this same
level of service. If necessary I am willing to do the work to
maintain the lightly-forked version of unzip.

Come on guys, mere Windows users are making these 3GB .zip files and
we're staring slackjawed at our computer wondering which decade our OS
was written in.

Thanks!

- Greg
