Package: auctex
Version: 11.55-1
Severity: normal
The Auctex built with Xemacs handles this properly, the most recent
Auctex working with straight Emacs does not. The desired behaviour is
that when a region is selected, and you use one of the font change
commands (C-c C-f C-e for instance for emphasize), it will wrap that
region inside emph brackets. Currently, emacs/auctex only appends
emph{} to the end of the region (or possibly is inserting at the
cursor point, I didn't test that).
