How do you select the region - i.e., do you have transient-mark-mode
enabled? If you do not have it enabled, the described behavior is normal
(probably because otherwise people would forget that they have set a
mark with C-space somewhere else long ago, and mess up their file with a
font changing command spanning several paragraphs or sections).

If transient-mark-mode is t, it works fine here.
