Thanks, I had a look at those.

The functionality that I would like to see implemented/returned is:

have a file where the kernel/initrd to be loaded just before /boot is unmounted can be specified, like the present /etc/default/kexec.

The design of systemd should allow for late loading of the kernel and initrd and starting that kernel via kexec.
