So, no bug for me then. :) If can guess what's your problem, I'd say your seeing the usb legacy problem (google for "usb handoff kernel"). In any case when when your touchpad is not detected by X, give a look at the contents of /proc/bus/input/devices to check if the kernel recognized the Synaptics/Alps Touchpad. Otherwise you're probably seeing udev bug #340202 or module-init-tools' #335861 (because of the legacy usb bios you'd need to load usb modules _before_ psmouse).
