Thanks for the suggestion Yury. You were right, it does seem to be triggered by the commit for MC ticket #2661. I can reproduce the bug building mc directly from git, but the bug goes away if I revert commit c55b480. I've filed a bug upstream at https://www.midnight-commander.org/ticket/3207.
