Hello, Maybe what I am hearing every 5 seconds is the transition from low fan to high fan instead of off to on. Difficult to say with all the noise from my computer.
I read that the fan control is also managed by the BIOS: http://petermolnar.eu/linux-tech-coding/dell-latitude-e6400-and-linux-mint-11-fine-tuning/ Maybe i8kfan and the BIOS are competing to control the fan ?
