That is a strange behavior!
The following extract of log
# exec /usr/bin/i8kfan 1 0
# exec /usr/bin/i8kfan 1 {}
# exec /usr/bin/i8kfan 1 0
# exec /usr/bin/i8kfan 1 {}
# exec /usr/bin/i8kfan 1 0
indicates that the fans are being set to the same speed every 5
seconds ("{}" means keep the same speed); contrary to the fact that
the fan keeps starting and stopping every 5 seconds. No ideias at the
moment.
One fact is that, at start, i8kmon probes fans speeds to use during
operation, and in this moment the fans are set to all speeds. But
after that, the log of "# exec ..." indicates changes in speed.
