I'm not certain but I don't think GNOME Shell's Activities Overview
uses tracker directly for search results but apps like Boxes,
Contacts, Documents, Files, etc. come with search providers that may
very well use tracker behind the scenes for the file types they are
interested in.

I couldn't tell you exactly how well the Files/Nautilus search
provider works since I believe it's a bit cripped on Ubuntu since
Nautilus on Ubuntu is built without tracker.
