well i've tried a bit, but haven't gotten it down to a repeatable build
yet. I figure it's better to push the fixes i have gotten in than to
let banging my head against the build system cause further delay :/

I don't think any of the changes are particularly controversial, but if
you'd like to review them i've pushed a stack to the shared repository.
git commit e43d44fcb2c is my proposed candidate for tagging as
debian/2%1.5.0+id17-2
I'm running it now and it works for me.
If i don't hear back from you in a day or so (or if you say "go ahead"
before then), i'll go ahead and tag and upload.
