Hi! Here's minutes from the online meeting held by the debian-installer team on July, 25th. A copy of these minutes is available online [1] as well as the full IRC log [2].
[1] http://people.debian.org/~lunar/d-i/irc-meeting-20070725/minutes [2] http://people.debian.org/~lunar/d-i/irc-meeting-20070725/log --- 8< --- Debian Installer team meeting number 13 has been held from 19:00UTC to 21:00UTC on Wednesday July 25th 2007 on [EMAIL PROTECTED] There were about 85 people connected to the channel during the meeting and 13 of them spoke during the meeting at least once. The full log of the meeting is available at http://people.debian.org/~lunar/d-i/irc-meeting-20070725/log Adding udebs to the archive: what do we want to allow? ------------------------------------------------------ We now have an agreement with the ftpmasters that no udeb will enter the archive without prior authorization from the d-i team. [1] gnu-fdisk is really young (not even in testing right now), too young to be considered as a replacement for fdisk in d-i right now. It would still be good to have ways to support udebs not endorsed by the d-i team. gnu-fdisk-udeb [2] would be welcome in a such place. The first step is to get support for multiple udeb repositories, though. Note: lilo-installer currently uses cfdisk to set partitions as "active", this can probably be removed and needs investigation. [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2007/07/msg00398.html [2] http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2007/07/msg00323.html Lenny beta1 release and release management ------------------------------------------ The big issue: who is going to take over d-i release management now that fjp resigned? otavio and Lunar are going to work with fjp and joeyh to acquire the needed knowledge about d-i RM. We will make regular points in the next meetings to see how it goes. bubulle keeps going with i18n stuff. :) faw is now taking care of d-i manual (but fjp plan to keep working on it). We did not really discuss beta1 release. Last status update from fjp was posted on the mailling-list [3]. [3] http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2007/07/msg00716.html Installation report processing and answering mails to d-boot in general ----------------------------------------------------------------------- fjp takes care of most of the installation reports. It might be better to share the load! We had a discussion about how relevant the full installation reports are with the current overall stability of d-i. A few possible alternatives were discussed as well. We agreed to make a collective effort to answer more installation reports. fjp will close old reports sent before Etch release candidates. There will be the need for help with upcoming replies. Lenny development: dhcp-client replacement ------------------------------------------ We've switched to dhcp3 as d-i dhcp-client. The binary is still too big for the best of d-i. Alternatives are listed on the wiki and we need to try them. joeyh is willing to help people to test them. waldi is going to check if busybox dhcp fits d-i needs and we will discuss what to do next based on his results. Lenny development: multiple udeb sources ---------------------------------------- waldi is working on supporting it in libdebian-installer. Changes will be needed in anna, main-menu and probably udpkg once libd-i will be ready. We will also need to support preseeding for multiple udeb repositories as well. Lenny development: devfs removal; cleaning up code or not? ---------------------------------------------------------- General consensus : let's clean up! There is a preliminary list of files to clean on the wiki [4]. We need to wait for the new udev before starting. An upload expected real soon. Commit messages will be cleary marked with "[devfs removal]" and should not be mixed with other changes. fjp will be doing some of the work. Supporting kFreeBSD is a different issue and portes will add back what they needs later. [4] http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/RemoveDevFS Lenny development: persistent device naming ------------------------------------------- We need someone to take the lead on that issue. We should start by finding out how other distributions are doing it. Kernel .23 will include the IDE-PATA switch and will rewrite fstab. We don't need to wait on kernel to make progress but we should use the same approach as they do. Lenny development: NTP and clock stuff -------------------------------------- joeyh just did the work. :) It needs more testing on non-i386 and nslu2. Let's stay alert on such issues to get the code mature. Dropping support for sparc32; cleaning up code or not? ------------------------------------------------------ The kernel dropped support for sparc32 and glibc as well so there is no turning back. We agreed to cleaning up the code, and fjp is willing to do it. Future of g-i ------------- Attilio has less time than he used to for taking care of the graphical installer. Daily maintainance will be done by Lunar once his branch is ready to be merged, with Attilio helping out. This will also give Attilio more time to fix remaining issues in the dependencies of g-i (e.g directfb). Lunar will first remove new features from his branch to get a side-by-side functionally equilavent implementation. Once ready, we will switch over to the new codebase at once. The remaining technical details will be sorted out on the mailling-lists. Finding new contributors ------------------------ We should turn fjp's paper into a "d-i developers reference"; maybe moving it to the svn in devel/doc or in the wiki. zinoviev proposed to do more HOWTOs like: * how to make a pkg-list where only udebs you need are installed, * how to update the version of udebs in the installer without restarting the emulator, * how to use snapshots in qemu. Lunar would like to do a call for volunteers on the debian-women mailling-list and a tutorial on how to hack d-i on their IRC channel. A call for volunteers will be asked in the next "bits for d-i" as well. We also need to ping ithe people who made contributions to d-i to count ourselves. bubulle is willing to do it. Status of the powerpc port -------------------------- otavio can help now that he has an efika board. PS3 port exists but needs merging. Would be great to recruit people based on that. nyu will build an .iso out of his grub-installer patch for powerpc and ask for more testing on debian-powerc. joeyh will have another look at it. Rename "Serial ATA RAID" to "ATA RAID"? --------------------------------------- joeyh suggested to do a poll on a user website. Future of partman ----------------- There was no time to discuss this point, but zinoviev sent a mail just after the meeting [5]. [5] http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2007/07/msg00723.html Postponed to the next meeting ----------------------------- These points were easier overlooked or we had no time to discuss them: * d-i beta1 release * Status of lowmem and recent cdebconf improvements * Switch to console-setup (lunar) * make d-i support nfsroot systems (anibal) * need an option of memtest86+ on the install CD (anibal) --- >8 --- PS: Thanks Anibal for the log and epsas for proofreading. :) Cheers, -- Jérémy Bobbio .''`.
