The installation went without problem with the drive in IDE emulation mode. It failed in SATA mode (no support in 2.4.27 shiped with d-i).
The problem is not that the controller is not supported, but rather that it is not yet recognized by the installer.

Yep. Thanks for the precision. I wrongly use "grep -i sata config-2.4.27" to check for in kernel support.
