I was reinstalling my laptop yesterday and ran into this problem. I found that replacing all the xfs_freeze stuff with a single call of 'sync;sync;sync' would not cause the deadlock.
Perhaps it is sufficient to freeze, then unfreeze the filesystem? -- Joshua Kwan
