Following some wisdom I've google(TM)d out there, I tried installing ALSA
on the laptop (see the original posting on the bug thread for the specs).
Sound works out of the box, except that it doesn't survive apm
suspend/resume (i.e. after it happens, no app can open /dev/dsp,
gets a device busy error).

However, from what I am reading in alsa-base bugs, e.g.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=266272
there are now apm suspend scripts packaged with the future versions
(in unstable). So I guess if I just wait it'll propagate to testing
and everything will be fine.
