Hello, I also have a similar error with rc1 and a Compaq CCISS controller, although it's a little bit worse. :) On the CCISS card, grub will not generate a valid device map - it just spits out a blank one. If I go in and generate one manually (with the contents "(hd0) /dev/ida/c0d0", and then attempt to re-install grub, I get the same error you mentioned.
