apt-install installs packages with stdin coming from /dev/null, and stdout going to a log file. In this situation the kernel packages do the right thing -- they use their defaults when the prompting fails. I have seen what you described, and I have also seen the system continue on past it. If there is a problem is it not something simple like you hypothesize. -- see shy jo
