Hi Ben, Success! Booting up on the Dell U2414H now has the screen centered. GUI windows and fonts are a little erratic.

The screen has shifted to the left by 10% so the Mate menus are largely hidden. I doubt there are many users with such ancient monitors but Debian is used by many downstream distros and you may wish to find a solution for the problem. If so I will be happy to cooperate.
