More information: I was able to resize the partion by hand from the
debian-installer shell prompt, with resize2fs, sfdisk -l, nano, and
sfdisk.  The result seems correct.

The rest of the installer seems to be able to write to the correct
devices.  For example, it has already successfully run mkfs to create
my /boot on nvme0n1p5.
