I can now turn off the screen using fn+F1 (two keys on the iBook keyboard). That may or may not be because I installed pmud and pmud-utils. I can also boot into Mac OS X.
That means that the only issue left is that I can't use the local display in debian. This is important to me because sometimes my ssh connection closes and I can't re-open it. I can tell that the system is up as I can access the web page. It is almost as though the ssh port closes.
