<Description of the install:

Over all a very smooth install; just no /data partition at the end
(mount point exists but doesn't mount.)
I tried installing it twice.

(I realize I can manually mount the partition but I feel strongly that
since I marked it specifically during installtion I'd expect the
Installer to do the mounting after rebooting -- should I just edit the
/etc/fstab or what?  At present I see -

I heard a rumor there  was an *old* way for /etc/fstab and a *new* way
for /etc/fstab -- apparently the new way is an empty /etc/fstab... So,

Contrary to stable, installing testing is installing a quite fast
moving target. The mirror(s) you were using might have been incomplete
at the moment you did your first tests....and finally resynced. What
you describe seems consistent with this.

About the "hangs" during package installation: in such cases,
switching to console 4 (Alt+F4) may help showing up what's going
wrong: maybe a package prompting users interactively without using
debconf (in such case, the prompting appears on VT4).

So, far, the original iossue you reported appears to be fixed in
latest versions of D-I packages. As a consequence, I'm hereby closing
this bug report.
