If this is so, then yes - AltGr is far from useless. :) But I believe that this use of Alt-gr is not possible with the standard us layot. Can you confirm that you use the standard 'us' layout. Does AltGr still work if you issue the command setxkbmap us -option lv3:ralt_switch (the option is to make the right Alt work as AltGr) > I'd say high.
