Thanks for your bug report - this is a realy serious problem caused by the Debconf part of console-setup (it expects to find jp(latin) layout that existed in the old times of etch). For now I can recommend you to change /etc/default/console-setup to contain lines like these two: XKBLAYOUT="us,jp" XKBVARIANT=",OADG109A" After this change X should be usable again. > This maybe the same problem as bug#524233 since I had console-tools > installed.
