Not sure if you are aware of DEP-14 [1], but it has a very convenient branch naming scheme you can use for versioning things for Debian. It suggests debian/bookworm-backports in this case, but feel free to use whatever you think it's best. Mind if you use bpo12-<version> you'll end up with a lot of stale branches.
