Well I reinitialised the partition map with fdisk (had used Apple HD SC setup before), then used HD SC setup to recreate the Mac partitions. Linux then found them fine, so I was able to continue to create the Linux partitions with fdisk. Now installing. So is Apple's HD SC setup screwed? Or s it likely that there was some other problem?
