application with ./app). Then you do not really need the mpi-compiler but 
you have the full potential for further developments.

(For instance, the installer tool "candi" installs everything with mpi + 
threading capabilities, thus you can use more or less every part of deal.II 
with the same deal.II + PETSc + Trilinos and so on. Some people also have 
included an interface for intel mkl.)
