Some benchmarks with the bench.py script:
Paul:

DBMail: | 0.0532 | 0.6054 | 6.9042
IMAPProxy| 0.3995 | 4.0095 | 40.0218
My production machine: (only 1 test run)
COUNT | 10 | 100 | 1000
---------------+--------+--------+---------
DBMail: | 0.0654 | 0.5453 | 5.1931
NGINX: | 0.0807 | 0.6606 | 14.1351
IMAPProxy | 0.0441 | 0.2085 | 1.7870
IMAPProxy+NGINX| 0.0478 | 0.2883 | 2.2884
Its not a highend Server, 32 GB Ram, E3-1230 V2, 500GB WD Raptor, Soft
Raid1 + DRBD, Percona mySQL 5.5.x
maybe someone else would be so nice and post there stats? so it would be
possible to find performance problems.

I tried to update mysql but I'm not even close to get closer to the
numbers quoted by Paul. Anybody can run imapbench.py on your system? I
think 5 millisecondsis too fast for login/logout cycle. Maybe you are
using something exotic, like database in RAM on localhost.
I was using PostgreSQL-9 on localhost with SSD. I can run the same tests
using MariaDB, and combine either with LDAP authentication against a
OpenLDAP server in the local network.
Gimme some time.
