I was going to say this but someone beat me to it.
qmail is a well designed concept. but it's no longer maintained by
the originator and he has also declared that none shall administer
his code. Hence there is a plethora of patches to wade through as
you try to determine how best to use qmail. (My opinion of the
developer is that he's a jerk for doing this to qmail)
For myself, documentation and current development are at least as
important as the performance speed of an application. If you are
starting out fresh you might consider the curve of getting qmail to
work correctly with all the patches while you learn about qmail itself.
postfix is a very capable mail server. If you find it can't do the
job then you are on a very short list.

Last time(2 years ago) i had a look at qmail is was mostly
unmaintained,
because the maintainer thought it has all needed features. Things
like ldap
support, has been available as patches only. And you were forced to
compile
qmail yourself, if you like to have ldap support, because of the very
strange license.
Postfix is well maintained and get's actively developed. And it
provides
you all needed features.
In my opinion you should not count only on speed but also how easy
you can
maintain a system.
