Marc, DBMail is not an MTA (SMTP server). On its own it is not capable
of sending any mail. You need an MTA. In a nutshell, DBMail provides POP
and IMAP services. Of the numerous MTA's around for the *nix world, the
top MTAs in terms of market share (in no particular order) are:
Sendmail, qmail, Exim and Postfix. Of these, I like the way Postfix and
DBMail work together. You should really get a book on mail servers
because there is A LOT MORE you need to know (Postfix and MX records can
seem a little daunting at first).

To start dbmail you need to use an init script. If you search on google
you should be able to find one for your particular flavour of *nix.

I think you're on the right track and you'll suss it out easily enough
with a little more research.

Cheers!
Chris
