Hi everyone,

I just started to play around with dt 'behind the scenes' a bit more and noticed some things that I'd like to discuss - first, to get an idea why things are like they are and second because probably I'd like to change a few things to make the usage easier (at least, as I think...).

Currently, my focus is on the DAM module and specially on the tagging. I come from LR and use tagging a lot there and find it really easy and straightforward to use. (I know, dt is not LR but I think, dt should/could be straightforward and easy to use too). Maybe you've already seen my feature request on github, but that's an other topic.

The points I'd like to learn more about:

1. when I add a tag using the ctrl-t shortcut (where the input/filter field in the thumbnail view opens), the tag is added to that image where the mouse cursor is over. Even if other images are currently selected. When the mouse is outside the thumbnail view, the selected images are affected. While I find it very useful to set e.g. star or color ratings by just pointing over a thumbnail without clicking on it, I find it confusing that I have to take care of the mouse cursor while adding a tag. Thats not just a one-key shortcut like a star rating. Maybe it's just me or the view from a newbie, but I think it could confuse others too...?

2. When I click in the tagging panel (tree or list mode, doesn't matter), I can start to type and an input box below the tree/list opens. It seems to select the first entry that matches. But I'd at least expect when I hit enter that the entry is added to the tags of the selected (not mouse-over) images. But nothing happens. It seems that the filter box that's shown below the tree/list (where the export-button is) does nothing at all.

3. When I enter my tag filter in the text box above the tree/list, the list is filtered how I'd expect it. But then, I'd expect that I can cursor-down to select the tag and hit enter to add it. But instead, when I hit the cursor keys, the selection of the thumbnail is moved.

4. When I set the focus in the tag (dictionary) list/tree I can select the tag I want using the cursor keys and would expect to add it via enter again. But nothing happens.

5. In the tag (dictionary) tree, I'd like to use the right/left cursor keys to expand/collapse a level by default. I know that this can be achieved by a new key binding in the css file. I'd just like to know if there are any benefits from using the default shift-left/right to expand and ignoring the non-modified cursor keys.

So, please don't get me wrong. I don't want to make anything down. Maybe it's just me who think it could be improved but in fact everything is fine by design. If so, maybe you can explain the idea behind these things (or point me to the location of the manual - I didn't find these things explained).

But maybe it's just because it is "good enough" and nobody had the time to make it better. In that case, maybe I can help and implement some of my ideas...

BTW: I didn't want to open an issue on github for this. Firtly it would have been a few single issues, and secondly it's not really a bug or a missing feature. Its just not as smooth as "I" would like to have it ;-)

And now, thanks for your patience :-)
Christian
