The misunderstanding is probably there. darktable is not an image browser, it is not even designed to handle images but RAWs which are not images. So I don't see this as a good idea as generating previews for the RAWs will be slow, very slow. This is so by design, if you are looking for an image browser then for sure you don't want to look at darktable.
