git is the version control software used to maintain darktable. You can download it from https://gitforwindows.org. I don't think that installing the lua scripts will help with your darktable folder opening problem.
What folder are your pictures in? Are there other folders under the main one that also contain pictures? If you are trying to just import the top level folder and get all of the pictures, do you have the recursive option checked in the settings (gear wheel at the upper right of the lighttable)? When you try to import the folder, how do you do it? Click the folder button at the top left, then use the file finder to click on a folder containing pictures, then click open?
