Thankyou Kofa for pointing me to further instructions and information. The Culling mode has some nice functions. I wish they were more intuitive but more on that in future. Also in future I might be able to help write clearer, more succinct instructions for darktable.
Alas my flashing problem remains. To illustrate the flashing problems I have taken the time to make 3 images totaling 31kb (attached). Sorry in advance for not using an image-hosting service, they are not reliable for me. The images are: - culling-mode-flashing.gif Highlights, with an added arrow, the problem that I get when switching between images in the Culling mode. A flashing result (1 photo on screen). - file-manager-mode-flicking_mouse-off-active-area.gif Shows the flicking effect I get in 'File Manager' mode when the mouse is not in the (what I'm calling) "active" part of the display (1 photo on screen). Notice the background flashes white-ish too. - file-manager-mode-flicking_mouse-on-active-area.gif Shows the flicking effect that I'm getting in the 'File Manager' mode when the mouse is in the "active" part of the display (1 photo on screen). These small flashes and flicks impact the user-experience. They make it more difficult to compare images easily, and feels buggy. The above are in lighttable but I've previously expressed my problem (and solutions) with the darkroom flashes (see first and second email by me in this thread). Can anyone reproduce these temporary "drawing" problems? Are they an 'easy fix' or difficult?
