It's worth pointing out that once you're comfortable with the software, you 
don't really need to select either of those modes in the preferences... you can 
just select "none" and create your own auto-applied presets in the appropriate 
modules so that you're at whatever starting point you want as soon as images 
are loaded. This is more flexible, allowing you to use different approaches for 
different image sources, etc.

Now that the basecurve module has been moved towards the end of the pipe like 
filmic, there's no reason you can't adhere to the same "scene-referred" 
guidelines even when using that module... but filmic is just so much faster and 
easier to make adjustments with, that it really makes more sense to create a 
filmic preset similar to whatever basecurve preset you like to use, and always 
start with that. You then have the option of just making some adjustments from 
there, or clicking the reset button and starting from scratch.

If there's a particular basecurve that you want some help emulating with 
filmic/exposure presets, name it, and I'll take a shot at it when I have 
time... I find it to be an interesting exercise. :-)
