just guessing but perhaps the cli conversion is applying settings to the
photos that the direct conversion dt->gimp is not.  can you direct dt-cli
to not apply *any* modules?  or check it the dt->gimp conversion provides
an xmp file which show what modules have been applied?

I don't see any way to specify modules except by supplying a matching xmp
file which maybe you can script.  

or maybe it is not possible to match the dt->gimp conversion.
