My preference goes to the second one. A pop up window will mean that we
cannot see the metadata easily when switching images. The pop up
windows will have to be opened/closed and reopened. Not appealing to
me.

Maybe with sections (tab on top) into the current metadata editor and
with a section displaying preferred metadata it would be ok for most
people?
