Sure :) How do the two cases differ from a user's perspective? What's
a typical use case?

For example, I'm using it for the Web to adjust a bit the exposure.
That is moving down a bit the exposure as my calibrated display (a bit
darker) will create a bit too much exposed pictures.

So I'm "appending" an exposure module with something like -0.2 IL.

The same (in the opposite direction) for the print module where I want
to add some exposure to avoid too dark print. Again I'm using the
append mode.

Now, if you want to replace a watermark and or border when exporting to
the web you'll use the "replace" mode to ensure that any watermarks or
border in the history stack will be replaced.

Does it mean that in "append" mode history stack items will constitute separate instances of the respective modules on top of any existing ones? As a consequence the original history stack will remain in effect and the new items come on top (your example with exposure correction).
