Just to close the loop on this. We found the problem with DBD::Oracle1.15 on perl 5.8. It is unrealeated to the Patch suggested by Tim Bunce on the DBI mail list. After pursuing that Non-domestic fowl for a while, we noticed that the oci.def file included with the source contains no reference to "OCILobWriteAppend". so: Remove liboci.a (created when you run "perl Makefile.pl", but not removed on "clean"). Add: OCILobWriteAppend to the oci.def file.
and everything should work.
